As we find ourselves in an era, where marginalized voices are coming together to challenge the definition of beauty a crucial question arises; Why do we still give importance to the idea of one universal beauty standard when our world is a tapestry of human differences?
This outdated notion, rooted in history and perpetuated by media promotes Eurocentric features as the ideal while pushing aside those who don't conform to its parameters. It's time we dismantle these beliefs and embrace the full range of beauty that flourishes within the Black community.
From Historical Shadows to Contemporary Enlightenment
History tells us about the origins of beauty standards reminding us of colonialism and cultural dominance. These echoes aren't relics; they continue to impact our present day society casting shadows over industries like beauty and media. However, amidst this backdrop a revolution is underway—a growing awareness of how these narrow standards have harmed the self esteem of women and girls.
A Beautiful Tapestry Woven, from Elements
In the Black community there exists a world of breathtaking beauty that rivals the vastness of the cosmos. Each variation in melanin becomes a shining star within our galaxy while every curl and coil of hair forms a pattern within the universe. Our diverse features serve as testaments to our heritage. We celebrate women like Lupita Nyong'o and Viola Davis, whose beauty and exceptional talent captivate audiences worldwide challenging traditional notions of what is considered beautiful.
Medias Role; Reflecting and Shaping Society
The media holds power to both reflect and shape societys values. Fortunately we are witnessing a transformation as diverse and authentic representations of Black beauty emerge. From embracing hair to featuring darker skinned models on fashion runways and magazine covers these shifts signify progress—cracks forming in the unyielding façade of monolithic standards.
Paths to Empowerment
Empowerment begins with taking action—through the choices we make every day. This encompasses being mindful about the media we consume and engaging in conversations. By supporting content that uplifts all expressions of beauty we can contribute to positive change. Furthermore advocating for and investing in brands that recognize our worth and embrace our diversity and celebrate our beauty can make a substantial impact on empowering ourselves and others.
Embracing Our Beauty Embracing Ourselves
Lets express empowering and uplifting words in our lives;
"I am an embodiment of beauty, in its essence."
"My skin represents strength and a rich heritage."
"My hair is a crown intricately woven with the threads of my ancestors."
These affirmations go beyond words; they serve as guiding principles on our self love journey grounding us in our value.
Imagining a Fresh Standard
As we conclude lets not simply abandon beauty misconceptions. Instead lets actively establish a standard that celebrates every shade every texture and every unique characteristic we possess. This lies at the core of the "Crowned in Color" initiative—a space where Black women aren't just included but revered, where our beauty isn't just acknowledged but honored.
Join the Movement
I implore you to not read these words but truly live them. Share your journey, your beauty and your confidence with the world. Lets fill media with authentic hues of beauty—diverse, vibrant and unapologetically Black.
With every post every story and every image we share, we are not redefining the concept of beauty. We are also reclaiming it. This is because we have always possessed beauty that deserves recognition.
